It was a night of plenty goals as Manchester United thrashed their visitors nine goals to nothing. The Red Devils look more desperate on the night as they aspire to keep the EPL title race alive.
The opening goal for Man United came in the 18th minutes via Aaron Wan-Bissaka while the last was through substitute, Daniel James, at the 93rd minutes.
Although, Manchester United squad did a superb job to claim the emphatic victory, yet, there are about three factors that favoured the Red Devils.

Firstly, nine regular players from the Southampton squad were ruled out of the game due to one injury or the other. This makes the game on Tuesday night to look easier for the host. Prior to the match, this factor was one of the major concerns for the Southampton manager. In their previous match against Aston Villa, Theo Walcot, Ibrahima Diallo and Oriol Romeu all left the pitch carrying one injury or the other. The Red Devils therefore became the favourite and received a smooth ride to their second record winning.

Secondly, Southampton were reduced to ten men inside two minutes and ludicrously to nine men with four minutes to go. Perhaps we can say that it was over-eagerness of Alexander Jankewitz that led to his dismissal. The Swiss midfielder got the role to take charge of the ball at the centre but he lunged at Scott McTominay and caught him high on his thigh.

With just 82 seconds of play, the referee did not hesitate to show him the red card. This action did not only compounded Southampton nightmares but gave United another historic win.
Thirdly, Manchester United paraded a squad full of stars. This factor was terrifying to the Southampton team who were mostly irregular in the first team. The Red Devils ceased the opportunity to level on point with Manchester City who will be facing Burnley on Wednesday night. United’s victory also cut City’s advantage in goal difference from fourteen to just five.
Moreover, Manchester United performance so far this season shows they are a top contender for the EPL title. But only time will tell how far this Manchester United team can go this season.
