Comparing Andre Onana and David de Gea’s stats at Man United, there’s a clear winner

Andre Onana’s transition to Manchester United hasn’t been smooth, especially compared to David de Gea’s previous performances.

Onana conceded 10 goals in his first five Premier League games, with just one clean sheet.

In contrast, De Gea, who is currently without a club, had a successful stint with United, winning the Golden Glove in the 2022/23 season with 17 clean sheets and a lower rate of 1.13 goals conceded per game.

United’s defensive issues are evident, with only two Premier League clubs conceding more goals than them so far this season.

Onana’s performance reflects this, with an average of two goals conceded per game. Fans had grown impatient with De Gea’s performances last season, leading to his departure.

Onana’s errors, such as conceding goals to Taiwo Awoniyi, Declan Rice, and Leroy Sane, have raised concerns.

Data comparing the two goalkeepers shows that De Gea has a better save percentage (70% compared to Onana’s 66.67%) and a higher passing accuracy (68.33% compared to Onana’s 74.14%).

However, Onana has faced more shots on target per game (six compared to De Gea’s 3.8), reflecting United’s defensive struggles.

The comparison between Onana and De Gea will become clearer as the season progresses, but Onana has work to do to match De Gea’s level of shot-stopping and overall impact on the team’s defense.
