Manchester City striker, Erling Haaland’s reaction after Cristiano Ronaldo branding himself as the ‘best goal scorer’ has sparked massive reactions on social media, Newspremises reports.
The Portuguese superstar made the comment on Friday, 19 January, at the Globe Soccer Awards, drawing a reaction from the young Norwegian.
In all fairness to Ronaldo, his remarks were justified, considering he outperformed notable players such as Haaland, Harry Kane, and Kylian Mbappe to claim the title of the leading goal scorer in the 2023 calendar year. Ronaldo achieved this feat by scoring 54 goals across both club and country.
Contrary to that, Haaland scored 50 goals, but the young striker missed seven games towards the end of 2023.
While speaking during the awards, Ronaldo acknowledged the much younger forwards like Haaland for their prowess in front of goal but couldn’t help but put himself on top, saying, as reported by Fabrizio Romano:
“I was the best goalscorer. I had to beat the young lions, like Haaland for example, so I’m proud.”
Ronaldo, who turns 39 in February, followed up his comment with a light laugh, but cameras panned to Haaland, who did not seem too impressed with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s initial attempt at humour.
Nevertheless, the Manchester City striker managed a smile when Ronaldo made a remark about his impressive appearance at the age of 38.
