From refugee to the World Cup: The incredible story of Australia’s Garang Kuol

After being included in Australia’s final 26-man World Cup squad, Garang Kuol’s extraordinary 2022 campaign just keeps getting better and better.

When Kuol was only six years old, his South Sudanese parents fled to Australia as refugees.


Twelve years later, the forward who will play for Newcastle United will be starting for the Socceroos at the biggest party in football.

The South Sudanese family of Garang Kuol was forced to escape their country amid the conflict and seek refuge in Egypt. The Kuol family lived in the country of North Africa for six years before emigrating to Australia as refugees.

Football in Australia

Kuol’s passion for football began when he joined the Goulburn Valley Suns youth team at a very young age. The youthful winger began to get interest from A-League teams while playing for Valley Suns. Kuol signed on with Central Coast Mariners of the A-League when he was 16 years old.

The teen sensation will hog the headlines globally after starring in a friendly against Spanish giants Barcelona, grabbing the attention of Xavi.

“He did really well. He created many chances, almost scored,” Xavi told Network 10 post-game.

“So 16 years quite young. Dwight Yorke told me, maybe he’s a big liar. But 16, unbelievable.

“All the best for him and all the players.”

Joining Newcastle United

Following his outstanding display against Barcelona in 2021, several top European clubs including Barcelona showed interest in the winger.

Newcastle United eventually prevailed in the fight to sign him, though, because to their tenacity. He is anticipated to transfer from Central Coast Mariners to the Premier League team in January.

Making his Australia debut

In a friendly matchup versus New Zealand back in September, Garang Kuol made his Australian debut. The 18-year-old is going to the World Cup after wowing manager Graham Arnold.
