Olivier Giroud was not a guaranteed starter week in week out for Frank Lampard or Thomas Tuchel this season, but as always he made a great impression off the bench and scored important goals throughout.
None was more important – or more impressive – than his bicycle kick against Atletico Madrid. Scored in the away leg, it secured a 1-0 win which helped us on our way to lifting the trophy, and it has been nominated as one of the potential Champions League “goals of the season” by UEFA.
It’s up against 9 others, but few were as impressive or as important as Oli’s effort.
Funnily enough, of the 4 goals conceded by Chelsea in the tournament all season, 2 are also on the shortlist. Karim Benzema’s equaliser from our draw in the semi finals against Real Madrid, and Mehdi Taremi’s brilliant consolation for Porto in the round before.
It took a lot to score past us this season.
