Super Eagles legend, Austin Jay Jay Okocha has faced criticism for expressing his preference for watching the Premier League over the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
Okocha’s recent comments about the state of the NPFL sparked controversy, as he firmly stated his inclination toward the English Premier League. Despite facing significant backlash for his remarks, the former Bolton and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder remains resolute in his stance.
Speaking to Brilla FM, Okocha defended his viewpoint, saying, “At this stage in my life, I believe it would be unjust to deceive our people or conceal the truth. If we aspire to progress, if we aim to enhance our standards and meet our expectations, then it is imperative that we face reality.”
“I made the statement that I would rather tune in to the Premier League on television than watch our NPFL because we are yet to attain the level we should be at. It pains me to witness that the hard work we have all invested has not resulted in significant progress,” Okocha explained.
In a bid for transparency and improvement, Okocha’s candid assessment reflects his dedication to raising the standards of Nigerian football, even if it means addressing uncomfortable truths.
His words serve as a reminder of the challenges faced by the NPFL and the need for constructive efforts to elevate the league to greater heights
