Chelsea legend John Terry has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, both widely acclaimed as footballing icons.

These two players are considered among the greatest in the sport’s history, they have amassed numerous titles and individual accolades throughout their illustrious careers, boasting an impressive collective total of 13 Ballon d’Or awards.

John Terry hails Lionel Messi

The former defender, who had encounters with both Messi and Ronaldo during his active years, shared thoughts on a UEFA post showcasing Messi’s memorable header for Barcelona during the 2009 Champions League final.

In that historic clash held in Rome, Barcelona secured a 2-0 victory over Manchester United.

Messi, a key figure in a formidable Barcelona side managed by Pep Guardiola, showcased his mesmerizing abilities in that crucial final.

Despite not being widely recognized for his heading prowess, Messi demonstrated an impressive leap, seeming suspended in midair as he guided the ball past the Manchester United goalkeeper. Rio Ferdinand, notably taller, was caught off guard.

Witness Messi’s extraordinary header during the 2009 final, a decisive moment that contributed to Barcelona’s achievement of the continental treble.

Terry simply commented via Sportskeeda:

“The GOAT. Great goal”

Here’s a screenshot of the former Blues’ defender’s comment made on UEFA’s Instagram post:

Reflecting on that particular match, Barcelona took the lead with Samuel Eto’o’s 10th-minute goal, and Lionel Messi’s headed strike 20 minutes before the final whistle solidified their victory.

On the contrary, Cristiano Ronaldo had a lacklustre performance, unable to find the net.

As a result, Manchester United fell short of becoming the first team to secure back-to-back championships in the Champions League era.
