Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen named among three finalists shortlisted for the 2023 CAF Men’s Player of the Year award

Nigeria’s forward, Victor Osimhen, has secured a spot in the final three-man shortlist for the 2023 CAF Men’s Player of the Year.

The announcement, made by CAF on Thursday via its official platform, reveals that Osimhen faces competition from Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi, a defender for Paris Saint-Germain, and Egypt’s forward Mohamed Salah, who plays for Liverpool.

Despite last year’s winner, Sadio Mane, not making the cut this time, Osimhen, the 24-year-old Napoli striker, emerges as the frontrunner after leading his team to their first Serie A title in 33 years, scoring an impressive 26 goals.

If successful, Osimhen could become the first Nigerian since Kanu Nwankwo in 1999 to claim this prestigious award.

Notable omissions from the award nominees are Moroccan goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou and Algeria’s treble winning Riyad Mahrez.

The winner will be unveiled at the CAF Awards Gala on Monday, December 11, 2023, at the Palais des Congrès, Movenpick, Marrakech, Morocco.
