Former Manchester United boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has declined an opportunity to take charge of the Norway women’s national team.
This decision comes following his departure from Manchester United in November 2021. Despite previous speculations linking him to managerial roles at English clubs like Burnley and Leicester, Solskjaer has remained jobless, patiently awaiting the right opportunity.
The vacancy in the Norway women’s team arose after the dismissal of Hege Riise on September 1, amid discontent following a disappointing performance in the Women’s World Cup. In light of these circumstances, discussions were held with Solskjaer to explore his interest in the position.
Solskjaer confirmed these discussions with the Norwegian Football Federation, stating, “Yes, I have spoken to the association about the job as national coach, of course I have. They have asked. But I’m not ready for that yet.”
Hege Riise’s termination stemmed from Norway’s elimination in the last-16 stage of the World Cup at the hands of Japan. This outcome was seen as a letdown for a talented squad, and Riise, who previously managed Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, faced criticism from her players. Barcelona’s Caroline Graham Hansen expressed her dissatisfaction, stating, “I feel like I’ve been stepped on for a year. I have not been shown respect.”
Despite her removal, Riise was offered a new role within the Norwegian Football Federation. Nevertheless, it appears that Solskjaer has opted against replacing her.
Solskjaer had previously hinted at his willingness to embrace a new role during ‘An Evening with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’ in May, saying, “I’ve got another job in me, if it’s the right chance and exciting enough.” He emphasized the importance of finding the right fit, whether that be a club with a unique culture or a potential return to Manchester United in a different capacity.
Solskjaer’s managerial experience includes stints at Manchester United, Molde, and Cardiff City. While at Manchester United, he managed 168 games, winning 91 of them but failing to secure any trophies, coming closest as a runner-up in the 2020/21 Europa League. His tenure at United came to an end due to a lackluster start to the 2021/22 season, marked by losses in five of their opening 12 Premier League matches and perceived issues within the dressing room.
