OPINION: Why Manchester United should sign Pau Torres instead of Rafael Varane

The Premier League Transfer Window is set to open in a few weeks and while so many deals are yet to be concluded, clubs have already started the necessary enquiries on the availability of potential signings.

In the case of Manchester United, they need quite a few signings to strengthen their squad and go one better than the 2nd place spot they got in the league last season.

One position they need to strengthen is the one half of their defensive partnership. The club are in the market to sign a partner for Harry Maguire as Victor Lindelof is deemed not good enough.

Three names have apparently been mentioned as options but only one of them would be signed. Rafael Varane, Jules Kounde and Pau Torres.

Varane is an experienced 28-year old defender who will obviously improve United’s defence immediately. He’s at the peak of his powers. And having won the Champions League and the world Cup, there’s nothing left for the French man to win.

Varane is a huge upgrade on United’s available options bar Harry Maguire. His height as well as experience would mean United would concede much less goals from corners.

The club found set pieces difficult to defend last season and whenever Maguire doesn’t play, it becomes even more difficult for them. A player like Varane, with his wealth of experience, will help them sort that phase out.

United have missed out on Varane once before, they can’t afford to do so again. At the same time, they have to avoid the same mistake entirely with another top La Liga defender who is younger. Pau Torres.

Torres is promising. At 24, he has got up to 4 years on Varane. His peak years isnt likely to match up to Varane’s, but his peak is definitely going to be better than whatever Varane has left. And United should buy into that.

Even before the Europa League final between Man United and Villarreal, Torres had been on the club’s shortlist. And if that game was used as a scouting one by the Red Devils, then Torres didn’t disappoint.

Even though he had an older player as a partner, Torres appeared to be the one coordinating the back. His calmness under pressure will be ideal.

He is bound to improve with age and get better. If he can be so good at 24, then watch him at 26.

If United buy Varane, they’ll get at least 4 years from him. If they get Torres, then they’ve sorted that position for close to the next decade.

Also with similar price tags, it only makes sense for United to sign the younger man who is also currently better than the World Cup winner.

Hi there terrific website! Does running a blog like this take
a large amount of work? I’ve absolutely no knowledge of computer programming however I was
hoping to start my own blog soon. Anyhow, should you have any recommendations or techniques
for new blog owners please share. I know this is off subject however I simply
needed to ask. Thank you!
