Portugal vs Ghana: football fans fume at referee’s decision not to use VAR

Football fans took to social media to express their displeasure with referee Elfath for his unusual choice not to revisit Ronaldo’s penalty incident, Newspremises reports.

Portugal and Ghana fought out a thrilling five-goal thriller in their Group H opening on Thursday, November 24 at the 974 stadium.

Portugal broke the game’s tie via penalty spot before Andre Ayew leveled the score immediately after, but the Selecao put the game out of reach of the Black Stars with two quickfire goals in the span of three minutes.

Ghana put up a valiant effort in the final 10 minutes of the game, even scoring a consolation goal through Osman Bukari, but it was in vain as Ronaldo’s Portugal took all three points.

But what seems to have caught the attenttion of social media users was the penalty incident involving Mohammed Salisu and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Below are the comments:

@_owurakuampofo wrote: “Omg there was actually no VAR check. This is just PURE robbery!”

@Blaqqkoffi added: “That was never a penalty and No VAR check.”

Another user @Popoolavictor6 reckoned: “Only when Ronaldo is playing a penalty can be awarded with NO VAR check.”

@Kushmannhuffy believed the referee robbed Ghana by not reviewing the penalty decision: “Pure Robbery…No VAR.. Disgraceful.”

@Yaw_Ampofo quizzed: “Why NO VAR ?”
