Ronaldo tells referee to cancel Penalty for Al Nassr during AFC Champions League tie

Cristiano Ronaldo exhibited remarkable sportsmanship that captured attention during Al-Nassr’s penultimate AFC Champions League encounter against Persepolis at the Al-Awwal Park on Monday evening.

Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr side were on the brink of confirming their spot in the knockout phase following four consecutive wins in Asia’s premier club competition.

Eager to maintain their flawless record, the Riyadh-based giants, led by the 38-year-old, initiated the game on the offensive.

What happened?

Right from the onset, the Knights of Najd displayed their aggressive intent, which led to a moment of contention.

Ronaldo, who had scored four goals in his last four outings, received a pass within the box and attempted to navigate his way past defenders.

However, a challenge from a Persepolis player seemed to trip him, prompting the centre referee, in close proximity to the incident, to signal for a penalty in favour of the home team.

Despite the referee’s decision, Ronaldo swiftly approached the official, signalling that no foul had occurred. His prompt action prevented the penalty call.

Upon reviewing the replays, it became evident that Ronaldo’s assessment was accurate.

Consequently, the referee, after verifying the validity of Ronaldo’s claim via VAR, reversed his initial decision, cancelling the penalty in a display of fair play and sportsmanship by the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
