Super Eagles fire warning to AFCON 2023 opponents, whitewash Dubai club in friendly

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have made their intentions clear for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, Newspremises reports.

Under the guidance of coach Jose Peseiro, the team demonstrated their prowess by securing a resounding 12-0 victory against a local club in Dubai during a training session held at their Abu Dhabi facility on January 7.

Ademola Lookman stood out as the star player, contributing four goals to the team’s triumph, while Victor Osimhen who is the CAF Player of the Year baged a brace.

The first half concluded with a dominant 6-0 lead for the Super Eagles, with substitutes Moses Simon and Umar Sadiq adding two goals each. Additionally, the opposing team contributed two own goals.

Further preparing for the tournament, Nigeria is scheduled to engage in another friendly match against Guinea’s national team, the Syli National, at Bani Yas Stadium on Monday.

Following this, the team is set to return to Lagos on Tuesday, welcoming Leicester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho to their ranks before their final departure for Ivory Coast on January 10.

Drawn in Group A alongside the host nation, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria commences their quest for a fourth continental title against Equatorial Guinea on January 14.

Subsequent matches include a clash against Cote d’Ivoire’s Elephants four days later and a final group stage game against Guinea-Bissau on January 22.

Expressing determination, head coach Jose Peseiro has affirmed the team’s ambition to vie for the championship.

Nigeria’s last Africa Cup of Nations triumph dates back to 2013 under the guidance of Stephen Keshi.
