George Weah : The only African in history to win the Ballon d’Or

George Weah is a great football player from the African country of Liberia.

Born in 1966, Weah joined a club called Young Survivors at the age of fifteen. Later, George Weah started his senior career in 1985 with Bong Range United. Subsequently, Weah played for some Liberian clubs such as Mighty Barrolle and Invincible Eleven, and reached European football in 1988 through Ligue 1 club Monaco.

Then, during his prime in the 1990s, George Weah was considered one of the best strikers in the world. George Weah’s speed, stamina, attacking instincts, finishing and technical ability made the Liberian footballer one of the best strikers of his time. In 1992, George Weah joined Paris Saint-Germain. George Weah played three seasons for Paris Saint-Germain, scoring 55 goals in 138 games.

George Weah left PSG in 1995 and then played for AC Milan in Serie A for five years. Due to his performances with both Paris Saint-Germain and Milan, George Weah became the first African to win the Ballon d’Or in 1995. Until then, only players from Brazil, Argentina and Europe had won the Ballon d’Or, breaking that tradition in 1995 when George Weah became the first African to win the Ballon d’Or. George Weah then played for Chelsea and Manchester City in the Premier League.

In 2000, George Weah moved back to Ligue 1, after playing one season for Marseille, then moved to UAE Pro League club Al Jazira. George Weah, who ended his club career in 2003, has scored 18 goals in 75 appearances for Liberia. George Weah, who was also named FIFA World Player of the Year in 1995, has been named African Footballer of the Year three times. Today, George Weah serves as the President of Liberia.
