The La Liga encounter between Barcelona and Cadiz on Saturday evening was paused following a medical emergency in the crowd, Newspremises reports.

The ugly incident happened in the 8th minutes of the game at Estadio Nuevo Mirandilla.

With Barcelona leading 2-0, a Cadiz fan suffered a cardiac arrest in the stands, which led to the match being paused immediately.


As the paramedics rushed to treat the fan in need of urgent medical attention, Cadiz goalkeeper Jeremias Ledesma ran towards the area of the stadium where the incident was occuring.

Ledesma was seen running with a defibrillator in his hands to hand to the paramedics.

The match was stopped for close to 20 minutes as the stadium fell silent after the incident.

Players from both teams were seen praying on the pitch as staff and coaches from the bench watched on concerned.

The on-field action took secondary importance amid the medical situation. The Blaugrana went on to win 4-0 after the restart.

The Catalan giants won their fourth straight La Liga game thanks to goals from Frenkie de Jong, Robert Lewandowski, Ansu Fati, and Ousmane Dembele in the second half.

With 13 points after five games and one more than their bitter rival Real Madrid, who has played one fewer game, Barcelona now leads the La Liga standings.
