Portugal was held by Serbia to a 2-2 draw on Saturday night in their second match of World Cup qualifiers but their star player Cristiano Ronaldo left the pitch unhappy after he was denied a late goal which could have given his country all the three points.
The Juventus fine strike looked to have crossed the final line when Serbia defender cleared the ball and the match referee overlooked Ronaldo’s effort. The Portuguese skipper was furious at the decision and quickly rushed to the match linesman hoping he saw it but he ignored it which resulted in Ronaldo receiving a yellow card.
Fans have been curious about the decision as to why the late-strike was not checked by the VAR or the goal-line technology. The VAR will be used in the European World Cup qualifiers which are in the rules of the competition which also applies to the goal-line technology.
That is why Ronaldo tried to talk to the linesman when the ball crossed the line as he knew there would be no VAR in the qualifiers. Moreover, the VAR sometimes helps in such situations despite, most of the people saying it interrupts the match and waste time.
The Video Assistant Referee could have given Ronaldo the goal he deserved last night and the star could have left the pitch know he had given his country all the three points. The entire Portuguese squad was left frustrated after the match despite Serbia players being happy, they had a comeback.
They scored two goals in the second half to cancel out a brace which was scored by Liverpool star Diogo Jota in the first half but they got a point which didn’t deserve after the goal was denied.
